Season
A relatively wet start to the 2022 season with high rainfall in winter and full soil moisture profiles in spring. A very dry but unseasonably cool summer resulted in a long and steady ripening period across both whites and reds. This aided fruit intensity and flavour development whilst maintaining great natural acidity.
Vinification
An elegant cool-climate Syrah picked from one of the highest blocks on the estate, fruit is picked with a Selective Harvester and then fermented as both whole bunch and whole berries for 11 days. Wine is then pressed into a mixture of new and seasoned French oak and matures for 9 months.

Dark red, very youthful and inky in the glass. Pretty and fragrant aromas of blueberry, sarsaparilla, anise, cedar and bramble. Mid-weight, fleshy and full of blue fruits, licorice, snappy acidity and nutmeg oak. A long, textured, layered and quite complete cool-climate shiraz
- The Real Review - Aaron Brasher
Provenance, as the name suggests, celebrates individual vineyards and sub-regions. In this case, the vineyard is one of the highest (450m) on The Lane estate, while the sub-region is Hahndorf. Anise, black peppercorn, allspice, cherry, bramble and vanilla pod come at you – lifted and aromatic – from the glass. This medium-bodied young Syrah shows real brightness of fruit. Tannins dance. And then there’s the nexus with a savouriness that elevates flavours, a touch of smoky cured meats, a pepperiness, which doesn’t dominate but really brings the wine to life. Could have a smidge more concentration but keeps true to the Syrah moniker with an overall red fruited spiciness and lift.
