Situated within our Hahndorf estate in the Adelaide Hills, our vineyard parcel, located at an elevation of 450m, encompasses two of the highest Shiraz blocks on the estate. The chosen north-facing vineyard, characterized by a uniform aspect, was specifically selected to yield the 2023 Reunion Syrah. The lean ironstone-rich soils contribute to a moderate vine vigor, resulting in the production of compact bunches with intensely concentrated flavours.
Season
The 2023 season was long and cool. Steady and consistent ripening matched with low crop loads ensured all varieties ripened well with the benefit of good-sized canopies. Mild, cool nights enhanced flavour development. The resulting wines are richly flavoured and high in quality with incredible aromatics.
Vinification
Destemmed fruit underwent a 3–4 day cold soak before a slow, cool fermentation with twice-daily pump-overs. The wine remained on skins for 15–17 days before basket pressing, then matured for 15 months in French oak (46% new). A small portion of whole bunch (5–10%) and a parcel co-fermented with Viognier add lift and aromatic complexity.

"Is it splitting hairs when it comes to calling a wine Syrah or Shiraz? Sometimes winemakers are, sometimes they aren’t, but in the end it’s what is in the glass that counts. This Adelaide Hills Syrah is 13.5% ABV, spent 16 months in French oak, is medium bodied and speaks with a strong, herbal-edged voice which immediately would place it in many people’s idea of Syrah. So, there’s that. It’s not loud, is slightly low-key in its approach, but it builds in the glass. An arresting herbal intrigue is a lovely part of the wine, all briar and sage, herbs and hints of pepper on the aroma amid a sea of blackberries, blueberries and lifted aromatic spice. As it builds in the glass, it warms to its Syrah task and the role of soft, toasty oak comes into play along with an earthiness, spice, red liquorice and ripe berries, all swept along on velvet tannins. Perked up by an acidity freshness, it finishes pretty fresh and alive for a three-year-old. That’s a good sign for future ageing." 2023 Estate Syrah

"There’s an inherent prettiness to this wine but then it’s also meaty and substantial. It carries more than its fair share of elegance too. It tastes of black cherries, roasted plums, smoked meats and leaf matter, with red rose and cedar characters adding extra polish.
