BLOCK SERIES

The Lane Vineyard Block Series show true varietal character and the influence of the terroir of The Lane Vineyard. Block numbers indicate the patch within the vineyard where the fruit is grown, as do the "Google Earth" coordinates on each label. Minimum intervention winemaking allows the vineyard to do the talking.

The Block Series are stylish, fresh, fruit driven wines with a true sense of place.

Block 14 Basket Press Shiraz

Block 14 Basket Press Shiraz

Location Icon35°00'54.74"S 138° 50' 10.39"E

Fruit from our highest, most exposed site on the vineyard. These vines are working incredibly hard throughout the growing season, their roots reaching deep into the ancient soils searching for scarce water resources through the limestone pores. As a result this wine has unsurpassed lifted aromatics, always displaying blue flowers, heralding bright red and blue fruits on the palate. Not surprising it has a trophy winning heritage!

Block 5 Shiraz

Location Icon35°1'51.2"S 138°49'55.94"E

A blend of some of our oldest plantings with selections of our close planted patches. There is minimal oak influence, so it really is the fruit doing all the work. Fantastic texture (but not too much) underpins the smooth lines of this contemporary, incredibly drinkable Shiraz which balances sweet and savoury characters perfectly.

Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir

Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir

Location Icon35°00'46.32"S 138° 50' 16.11"E

A blend of 4 clones hand-picked from a carefully chosen South Eastern facing site in a cooler and wetter region of the hills, just outside of Woodside.  50% whole bunch pressing and whole bunch warm fermentation bring tannins and complexity to provide the perfect balance to the bright cherry and rhubarb notes.

Block 8 Merlot

Location Icon35°00'54.87"S 138° 50' 19.27"E

Despite its prime location at the entrance to The Lane, this is actually the site with the lowest readily available water. This keeps our merlot on a strict diet, so when coupled with extensive bunch thinning at veraision, only the finest fruit makes it to harvest day. Result – one very smart, elegant, supple wine that celebrates all that we love in Merlot, but in a highly refined manner.

Block 2 Pinot Gris

Block 2 Pinot Gris

Location Icon35°00'50.69"S 138° 50' 11.50"E

Close planted (4166 vines/ha) means competition for scarce nutrients is high. As a consequence, we ask each vine to produce less bunches and work hard to concentrate rich flavours that define Pinot Gris. Concurrently cold nights and ironstone soils infuse a definitive flintiness or mineral character. Once picked cool, slow ferments and time on full lees build texture and depth of flavour, thereby creating the perfect chilled aperitif.

Block 10 Sauvignon Blanc

Location Icon35°00'54.74"S 138° 50' 10.39"E

Whilst more time consuming, cane pruning Sauvignon Blanc vines provides consistent yields and vibrant flavours. The steep South facing slopes shelter the vines from late afternoon sun, keeping the refreshing citrus zest focussed and enhances the clean, mineral finish.

Block 3 Chardonnay

Block 3 Chardonnay

Location Icon35°00'54.94"S 138° 50' 6.12"E

The single coldest site at The Lane (hence the location of the vineyard shed!) could only be planted to Chardonnay. Always the last block of this variety we harvest, this extra slow ripening allows for more complexity in the fruit and means we can be very ‘hands off’ in the winery. Focussed, restrained, mineral, are all apt descriptors for one of our favourite wines of the estate.

Block 1A Chardonnay

Location Icon35°1'53.10"S 138°49'50.62"E

Careful matching of each clone to their respective site ensures balance and concentration of flavours through slow, even ripening. Similarly, cool, slow ferments allow maximum extraction of these same vineyard characteristics. The final wine is taught, harmonious blend of pear, white peach and grapefruit flavours with a refreshingly dry finish.

A blend of three clones of Chardonnay - all shoot thinned early in the season to enhance vine balance, even ripening and focus flavour concentration. Cool south facing sites provide fresh acidity through moderate growing conditions.
